The larger your display, the more visible the improvements. Third, although everyone should experience "some" PQ improvements with these new players, the improvements will likely be less pronounced on smaller displays (40" and below, IMO).
Even a 2% image improvement is noticeable to me, your mileage may vary. Second, I'm an acknowledged videophile (doesn't mean I know more about video than others, but does mean I'm always seeking a better image). Had these new players been only a slight improvement, I would not have posted at all and would have said so if asked. Kudo's to the team that put this together.įirst, most of you know I'm a K dealer, but I call it like I see it. The latest chipsets are superb, but it takes a proper implementation to pull the best from these chips and K's team has obviously accomplished this with these new players. A wonderful implementation and blend of both K's and Gennum's technology. There are many other pluses to this player and I will not repeat the S&V review, but suffice to say I am VERY, VERY pleased with K's latest player. Overall an excellent image and, IMO a clear improvement over earlier players. Contrast also "appears" to be improved, but I have not measured that yet. Color reproduction was excellent, accurate and "alive" but not oversaturated. I found a higher level of image clarity (especially on the Covers page) than I expected, not only sharper (without EE at lowest setting) but projecting a more pronounced image separation (what most call 3D affect or image depth).
I, like many of you, read the review in S&V and would have to agree with most of those observations. I had little doubt that I would see "some" improvement in image quality, especially given the use of the Gennum chipset, but frankly I wasn't expecting to see as much as I did. All produce, or in the case of VPs help to produce, excellent images.
Also had the latest from Lumagen (Radiance XD). I also stay ahead of the curve on video processing and own PM's Crystalio CII VP (which also implements the Gennum VXP chip, although they are/were using the first generation chipset). Name the manufacturer and I've probably owned, or worked with, their gear. I've gone through some of the best equipment available, and in the DVD Player category I've owned the best from Pioneer, Marantz, Sony and Denon (as well from Primare, Tag McLaren, Meridian and Goldmund, on the high end). I consider myself somewhat of a videophile and usually spare no expense (within reason) when it comes to improving the quality of video in my home.
